Do I Need a TEFL to Teach English in China in 2022?

To what extent does teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certification in China factor into employment opportunities? Understanding the requirements of the school and the factors that might affect your compensation are important as you explore teaching English in China.

Two things will become immediately clear to you when you explore your options for teaching positions in China:

Everyone is eager to "assist" you in your job search and...

All international English instructors must meet China's minimum criteria.

The "Teaching English as a Foreign Language" (TEFL) Certificate is one such need.

When it comes to cheaply seeing China, teaching English is a tried-and-true method (at least before COVID!). What could be better than being paid to travel and experience other cultures?!

    Here's the deal, though:

Is a TEFL certificate required to teach English in China, or is it only preferred?

You should really think about getting your TEFL certification if you plan on teaching English in a foreign country. However, depending on the specifics of your case, it may or may not be essential.

Can You Teach English in China Without a TEFL Certification?

    It's only a maybe, that's all.

    Observe as I elaborate.

The vast majority of reputable institutions that seek for international instructors stipulate that their prospective recruits have a bachelor's degree at the very least. Plus, many institutions go a step further by requiring teachers to have a bachelor's degree and a teaching credential.

Even though a school doesn't mandate TEFL certification for new recruits, they may pay more if the hire is TEFL certified.

So, if you aren't picky about which school you want to work at or aren't interested in earning the maximum compensation possible, the solution is this:

To teach in China, you need not have completed the TEFL course.

However, the educational requirements vary somewhat.

    Justifications for Pursuing TEFL Certification

Having a TEFL certificate isn't necessary, although it's strongly encouraged.

Not everyone who teaches English in China needs a TEFL certificate; in fact, I and many of my colleagues spent years doing so without one. Indeed, this is a realistic possibility.

Although getting TEFL certification for your China teaching position may cost you both time and money, there are two major benefits to doing so.

Everyone benefits from having a TEFL certificate.

In the United States or Europe, no institution of higher learning would employ a janitor from the street to teach.

If we can't trust on China to follow suit, why should we?

Employing foreign workers without proper training has been a costly mistake for China over the last decade.

But if you're considering teaching English in China, getting your TEFL certification is a must. Taking into account these positives:

Trust me, knowing how to handle a classroom full of pupils of varying ages isn't always intuitive, but it will make your life much simpler in the long run.

Since English is most likely your first tongue, you may not know there are significant differences between speaking English and teaching English. There is no telling how many times I have to respond, "You know, let me think about it and I'll get back to you," in response to a query regarding English language. Teaching English to speakers of other languages is challenging, but a TEFL certificate may help you become ready for the task.

Mastering new material is easiest when you're having a good time doing it. However, how can you ensure that your classroom is enjoyable for your students? The TEFL will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to succeed.

Did you know that your foreigner score affects whether or not you are granted a new visa in China? Those who have completed a TEFL course have a higher foreigner score than those who have not. Having a TEFL certificate is an added bonus, among many others.

Get paid to go to China, stay there, and work there!

Getting licensed before moving to China to teach is a smart idea for a number of reasons, including those listed above.

However, the financial incentive is another factor that might swing the vote.
