Teach English In China 2020

How To Teach English In China 2020

Obtain TEFL Certificate

In order to legally be an English teacher in China, you need 4 years of college degree and English teaching. Although it is possible to work illegally in China, the Chinese government has finally begun to crack down and expel unregistered teachers. I strongly recommend that you find a legal way to work, because it will not only help you find a better position, but also help you get more pay! While some courses may offer you "free English teaching," keep in mind that you will "pay" for English teaching by earning a lower salary. My suggestion is to do an English teaching online before you go, so that you can master the best job when applying.

Once you have your English teaching certificate, you can start looking for a job. You can also show up in China without a job and start making connections on the ground, as well as getting online. This may be your best bet for a decent position in China, and you can check out the school before deciding where you want to teach.

Get your visa

When teaching legally in China, the first step is to obtain a Z work visa (not a business visa) in your country or Hong Kong. Your company should provide a letter of invitation and other relevant documents, such as a foreign expert license. Then, you need to fill all the appropriate visa forms online.

When you have all the documents ready, take your passport photo and go to the local consulate for your visa, which should take a few days. Some consulates will let you expedite your visa for an additional fee, which may be cost-effective if you are staying in a hotel. But do a survey first, because some consulates don't allow it.

If you don't have a consulate in your city, you can look for a visa service company. They will double check that all your documents are in order and you can send them your passport and documents and ask them to line you up. That's a lot cheaper than a plane ticket!

Download all APPs

Before you go to China, there are a few APPs that you should download. First, WeChat will become your life in China. Not only is everyone texting on WeChat, but it's also the most prominent social media. You can join expat groups, chat with colleagues, share files, transfer money, find a taxi, read blog posts, book tickets and train tickets, and more! Next, you'll need to download Pleco, a Chinese dictionary app, and a Baidu translation. While you can travel around China without speaking Chinese, it's a lot easier if you can learn some survival phrases and translate some things on the go.

Once you've done all of the above preparations, you're ready to begin your adventure in China! While it may seem like a lot of steps, you'll be fully prepared to step on the plane and enjoy an incredible year.
