Work In China Teaching English
China's foreign teacher English employment market is the largest in the world. There is a great demand for English teachers in China. Schools recruit all year round and interview them by phone and email in advance. In most cases, people who Work In China Teaching English will be reimbursed for air tickets, and schools will generally provide free housing for teachers. There are more than 1.3 billion citizens and an estimated 400 million English learners in China. There is no sign that China will soon give up the title of the No. 1 job market for English teachers.
At present, tens of thousands of native English teachers live in China. The demand for foreign teachers far exceeds the supply of teachers willing to come here. There are many personal reasons for their coming here. Some people want to experience Chinese culture here. Some people have had some negative experiences in their own country and just want to leave there for a while. Some people just have a college degree and want to find a job abroad. They can buy their own foreign experiences while they have them.
The biggest obstacle to teaching English here in China is that teachers have a misunderstanding of word usage, pronunciation, punctuation, and sometimes even the definition of words. There are many such teachers who will defend the mistakes they have learned. Sometimes I just walk away and leave them with a misunderstanding of certain aspects of English. It's not worth arguing about, and it's not useful. The professors in college taught them what they knew and they believed they were right.
There are also many Chinese English teachers who are very open and honest in their learning. They want to know more. They will ask questions frequently. Occasionally, I don't know the answer and tell them. However, I always take the initiative to find answers for them and help them. Part of our Western mindset is honesty and trust, especially when you are a teacher and are teaching and nurturing people. There's no shame in saying "I don't know the answer to that question" if it's something you don't know. But, I'll find out." I've found that there are a lot of people, especially young teachers, who are like that. They are more concerned with the truth than they are with looking good or "looking good". So, I find that many teachers are like that. They are willing to be corrected by others because they don't want to just 'look' good, they want to 'do' good, do right, do right.
The cost of living for English teachers in China is very low. The rich salary gives English teachers a chance to live a comfortable life in China, and at the same time, they can save up to 600-1750 US dollars a month, which is almost three times the purchasing power of the United States. English schools provide about 20 to 25 hours a week to allow Chinese English teachers enough time to travel and explore the country's endless treasures.
China has more than 50 cities, each with a population of more than 1 million. Popular destinations for English Teaching in China include Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Guangzhou.
