Photo: Reuters<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking publicly for the first time about tens of thousands of mostly migrant workers driven out of \u201cillegal structures\u201d in the south of the city, Beijing party boss Cai Qi told a government meeting on safety that those evicted should be given time to move out, the official\u00a0Beijing Daily\u00a0reported on Monday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Authorities have ordered thousands of people to leave a sprawling network of rented <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/accommodation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accommodation<\/a> in a 40-day campaign launched after a fire ripped through a two-storey building in Xihongmen, Daxing district, just over a week ago, killing 19 people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As part of the crackdown, officials also shut down small plants, shops and restaurants, in some cases cutting electricity and water supply without notice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.hiredchina.com\/FpcBULfGLszGkZfRiZU0bfBDugD9?imageView2\/0\/format\/webp\/q\/75\" alt=\"\u5fae\u4fe1\u56fe\u7247_20171129111041.png\" width=\"410\" height=\"262\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Beijing party boss Cai Qi (centre) addresses a meeting on the safety in the capital. Photo: Imagine<a target=\"_blank\" class=\"inside_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hiredchina.com\/articles\/tag\/china\/\" title=\"View all posts in china\">china<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe are facing challenges in developing the city safely,\u201d he said. \u201c[We] must make ensuring the capital\u2019s safety and stability our biggest political task.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite the assurances, employers are scrambling to house migrant employees and keep them in the area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hu Zhiqiang, 35, owner of a home decoration company said he was desperate.\u00a0\u201cMy eight workers used to share a basement in a residential building downtown. But the authorities have decided the basement is dangerous since the Daxing fire. So I have to rent two\u00a0flats for them \u2013 and no bunk beds are allowed,\u201d Hu said.\u00a0He said the situation was worse for 20 or so other workers in Daxing that he used to contract to.\u00a0\u201cThey have all been evicted. Some are trying hard to rent a new home, while some are planning to leave for their hometown and never come back,\u201d Hu said.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve never felt so helpless. Costs are rising sharply. Photo: Imaginechina<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some bigger companies were faring better, with JD.com, the country\u2019s second-largest e-commerce firm and a major employer of couriers, housing workers in its dormitories and offering some funds for relocation, according to a report on Sina.com.\u00a0The company was not available for comment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 40-day campaign has attracted strong criticism and generated an outpouring of sympathy for the people forced onto the street.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a protest letter to the leadership last week, more than 100 intellectuals labelled the campaign \u201cruthless\u201d and \u201ca serious violation of human rights\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Amid the outcry, the municipal government has asked grass-roots cadres to spend more time communicating with migrant workers before evicting them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe government has paid a high level of attention to it and it has ordered [local officials] to immediate eradicate these problems [of hasty evictions],\u201d the authority said.\u00a0Cai said earlier that the government should help the evicted migrants look for new <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"inside_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hiredchina.com\/articles\/tag\/jobs\/\" title=\"View all posts in jobs\">jobs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Xihongmen held its first job fair for migrant workers on Monday afternoon, according to\u00a0Beijing Youth Daily.
