Cerebral atrophy is associated with many diseases that affect the brain including cerebral palsy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lin, who is from Guizhou province in the south, told the news outlet that she badly wanted a child and had tried in vitro fertilization without success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She eventually paid an agency \u2013 Shenzhou Zhongtai \u2013 based in Wuhan, Hubei to arrange a surrogate birth in Cambodia after she was told by her doctor that IVF had a low success rate, the report said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.hiredchina.com\/Fl8F0d78zjIC-wwvroCc4ccly2YV?imageView2\/0\/format\/webp\/q\/75\" alt=\"\u5fae\u4fe1\u56fe\u7247_20180108141254.jpg\" width=\"408\" height=\"262\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The baby boy was born in Cambodia in July and diagnosed with brain atrophy in October. Photo: Sina.cn<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although medical institutions and staff in China have been banned from carrying out \u201cany form of surrogacy\u201d since 2001, the <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"inside_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hiredchina.com\/articles\/tag\/business\/\" title=\"View all posts in business\" >business<\/a> operates in a legal grey area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lin said she realized something was wrong with her son after she brought him back to China. She told Kanfa News that when she contacted the agency about her son\u2019s condition, it offered to arrange another surrogate birth for her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAfter the baby was diagnosed with cerebral atrophy, we <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/contacted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contacted<\/a> the agency and they replied that if there is a problem with the baby &#8230; the agency will arrange a new surrogacy with no charge,\u201d Lin was quoted as saying. \u201cThis baby was three months old [at the time]. He is a person \u2013 a life. For [the agency] he is just a business deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But a Shenzhou Zhongtai spokesperson clarified on Thursday that the agency had not made this offer. Rather, Lin was told they could arrange a new surrogate birth if there was a serious problem during pregnancy, but not after the baby was born, the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a statement posted on its official Weibo account on December 29, the agency said the <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"inside_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hiredchina.com\/articles\/tag\/health\/\" title=\"View all posts in health\">health<\/a> of infants delivered by surrogate mothers was its top priority and it noted that the cause of the baby\u2019s condition was unclear.
