(Korea Coast Guard via AP)<\/p>\n<p>The collision, between the Panama-registered tanker Sanchi and the Hong Kong-registered bulk freighter CF Crystal, occurred at about 8 pm on Saturday in the East China Sea, roughly 160 nautical miles east of the Yangtze River Delta, Xinhua reported, citing a statement from China\u2019s Ministry of Transport.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.hiredchina.com\/FsJ56JItNkG0OJH7EcdNKqIXsy_l?imageView2\/0\/format\/webp\/q\/75\" alt=\"\u5fae\u4fe1\u56fe\u7247_20180108165118.jpg\" width=\"464\" height=\"270\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The 21 members of the Hong Kong-registered bulk freighter CF Crystal were rescued. The 21 members of the freighter\u2019s crew \u2013 all Chinese nationals \u2013 were rescued.<\/p>\n<p>After the collision a fire broke out on the tanker, which was still burning on Sunday, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSanchi is floating and burning as of [9AM]. Photo credit: VOANews<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Chinese <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"inside_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hiredchina.com\/articles\/tag\/foreign\/\" title=\"View all posts in foreign\" >foreign<\/a> ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Sunday that the Chinese government attached high importance to the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cause of the collision is still under investigation,\u201d Geng said.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s maritime authorities sent eight vessels to support the search and rescue effort, three of which will be involved in the clean-up operation.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea, in coordination with the China Maritime Search and Rescue Centre, had sent a coastguard ship and a fixed-wing aircraft to help.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAEAAAABCAYAAAAfFcSJAAAADUlEQVQImWNgYGBgAAAABQABh6FO1AAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.hiredchina.com\/FsbnvoPY7Q3RN1h7QzjCZYK7cmUT?imageView2\/0\/format\/webp\/q\/75\" alt=\"\u5fae\u4fe1\u56fe\u7247_20180108165125.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Photo credit: mediums.world<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The tanker, which is owned by an Iranian shipping company and managed by the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC), was <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"inside_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hiredchina.com\/articles\/tag\/travel\/\" title=\"View all posts in travel\" >travel<\/a>ing from Kharg Island in Iran to Daesan in northwestern South Korea and had been scheduled to arrive on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p>It was carrying 136,000 tons, or just under 1 million barrels, of an ultra-light crude worth about US$60 million.<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian official said the tanker had been rented by South Korean company Hanwha Total, Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n<p>Hanwa Total is a 50-50 partnership between the Seoul-based Hanwha Group and the French oil giant Total.<\/p>\n<p>The Hong Kong-registered freighter is owned by a company based in eastern China\u2019s Zhejiang province and was shipping grain from the United States to the southern Chinese province of Guangdong.<\/p>\n<p>The vessel, which was reported to have been damaged in the collision, was due to arrive at its destination on Wednesday. The reports did not elaborate on the extent of the damage.<\/p>\n<p>The incident is the second involving an NITC-operated vessel in less than two years. In August 2016, one of its supertankers collided with a container ship in the Singapore Strait.
