WeChat\u2019s monthly active users passed one billion for the first time during this year\u2019s Spring Festival<\/a>. Tencent CEO Pony Ma revealed the number in an interview on Monday at the National People’s Congress. The one billion mark comes not long after<\/a> Tencent\u2019s third-quarter results in November, which show that WeChat\u2019s monthly active users had passed 980 million, a significant 15.8% increase compared to the same period of the previous year. It’s still far behind Facebook, which has 1.5 billion monthly active users.<\/p>\n

During last month\u2019s Spring Festival season, WeChat rolled out a series of promotions<\/a>\u2014including Spring Festival Shake (\u65b0\u6625\u6447\u6447\u4e50), in which users can participate in lucky draws to win prizes, and digital blessing eggs (\u795d\u798f\u5f69\u86cb), which allows users to send new year wishes to loved ones.<\/p>\n

Without a doubt, WeChat\u2019s Spring Festival<\/a> campaign has paid off. Not only did its monthly active users peaked during the period, it is estimated that around\u00a0688 million people used WeChat\u2019s\u00a0hongbao\u00a0feature on Chinese New Year\u2019s Eve,\u00a0which is a 15% increase from the same time last year.<\/p>\n

First released in 2011, WeChat started as Tencent\u2019s mobile messaging app. With success in pushing out its mobile wallet and mini-programs, WeChat has since then evolved to become more than a messaging app and has created an ecosystem of its own. The mini-programs include features across different categories such as e-commerce, gaming, and food<\/a> delivery which has done an effective job of keeping users within the messaging app.<\/p>\n

Last Friday, WeChat\u00a0launched the beta version of its new shopping<\/a> platform \u5fae\u9009, a mobile market<\/a>place powered by mini-programs.<\/p>\n
