Many people want to know whether it is legal or even possible to get a job as a teacher without a bachelor’s degree in China. So let’s talk about it. If you don’t have a college degree, can you teach in China? The answer to this question is: it’s complicated.

"Teaching

In order to work full time in China, you need a work visa, called a “Z Visa“, and in order to get a Z visa, you need a degree. So, you see, in teaching English in China, a degree is not necessarily a job requirement, but a visa requirement.

The requirements for full-time teachers in China are as follows:

University degree (any major)

Native English speakers

TEFL certificate or 2 years of teaching experience.

If you decide to teach English in China on any visa other than Z visa, you will face the risk of deportation, huge fines and even possible sentence.

However, you should know that China is a huge country with a large population. Most people want their children to learn English well. Because of this, there is a great demand for English teachers in China. That’s why recruiters and schools often ask you to go through everything.

Recruiters and schools often tell you to come with a tourist L visa or a business m visa.

Note that these visas do not allow you to work in China. Again, the only visa that allows you to work is work or Z visa. It’s quite risky for the school!

Schools hire teachers on L and M visas, and they just don’t think they or you are likely to get caught. There’s no reason to get caught unless the police or immigration suddenly appear at your school and ask to see your papers. But that doesn’t mean you should take the risk.

In China, illegal teachers are often caught. It’s no joke that the police will randomly carry out raids to try to catch illegal workers.

How to teach English legally without a degree in China?

If you don’t have a college degree and you are eager to teach English in China, you will be happy to know that there is a legal way for you to teach English.

Although you can’t be a full-time teacher, you can be an intern.

In China, it is completely legal to use the student (x) visa as an intern, which is the only legal way to teach English in China without a degree.

"Teaching

The requirements of teaching practice are:

Fluent in native or English

High school graduates

Over 18 years old

Of course, there are advantages and disadvantages in teaching practice. First of all, visa x is only valid for half a year. Second, your salary will not be very high.

However, if you don’t have a degree and it’s your dream to teach English in China, then internship is a good choice.

As an intern, you will gain valuable English teaching experience, earn enough living expenses, maybe save a little money (depending on which city you are in), and your visa may be extended for another six months!

Also, learning even a little Chinese will help you to teach English in China!

Many people want to know whether it is legal or even possible to get a job as a teacher without a bachelor’s degree in China.
