A potential teacher wasn’t even needed to have a university degree, let alone any teaching certifications or experience.

In the stepping in years, the requirements have actually ended up being much more stringent, nevertheless, on par with what is expected in most industrialized nations. There are still some cities in China with more lax requirements, but a university degree, a TEFL certificate and two years of mentor experience are now quite standard expectations.

Why You Should Get a Tefl Certification In China

A TEFL certification got outside of China needs to be validated (notarized, confirmed by your local Secretary of State, or the comparable workplace if not in the US, and then legislated by the Chinese embassy). This must be done prior to showing up in China in a procedure that is subject to the same wonderful bureaucratic strictures as any other files required for the visa process. This takes plenty of time, persistence, and a good piece of cash, most likely at least USD150.

A TEFL certification gotten from an accredited Chinese TEFL program, nevertheless, does not require any extra authentication, and is for that reason the very best choice if you’re already in China and/or need it in a hurry.

Which TEFL Should You Get?

TEFL credentials come in two main forms, the 60-hour certification and the 120-hour certification. Ten years back, a 60-hour TEFL certification brought some weight in China. Visa and permit policies now being what they are, nevertheless, the 60-hour TEFL is basically worthless. In my research, any school or city that needs a TEFL certification will demand the 120-hour course.

You may likewise discover 20-hour weekend TEFL courses and other shorter courses. While these courses are less expensive and might provide a great foundation in mentor English as a foreign language, they do not satisfy the requirements for a work permit in China.

It’s Not Just About the Documents

While numerous foreign instructors may see the TEFL certification process as a simple rule, a perfunctory step on the path to getting a well-paid teaching job in China, I found taking the TELF qualification in China itself to be rather important.
