Standing out amongst intense rivalry and placing a strong focus on inherent aptitude, the Chinese voice acting realm contrasts sharply with the approaches of other countries that prioritize technical prowess and equipment. In this landscape, innate talent reigns supreme, placing professional instruction and previous experience in a secondary position. Furthermore, versatility is highly valued in China, with a substantial demand for voice actors who possess the ability to deliver a varied repertoire of voices and styles. Such an emphasis on diversity cultivates an all-inclusive atmosphere, providing aspiring individuals, regardless of their past experiences, with the opportunity to enter and flourish within the industry.

Breaking the language barrier

The potential hindrances that a non-Chinese native may face in pursuing a career as a voice actor in China may raise questions. However, rest assured, diversity is embraced in the Chinese voice acting industry, and being a non-Chinese native will not limit one’s opportunities for success. Fluency in the Chinese language and its intricacies is crucial for this line of work, as Mandarin is the primary language used in most roles. On the other hand, the demand for voice actors with different accents and languages in China offers a unique advantage. For instance, possessing both fluent Chinese and English skills as a native English speaker can open doors in the dubbing industry. This rare combination of linguistic competence and talent is highly sought after in the Chinese market.

The power of voice acting training

Although previous experience is not a prerequisite for voice acting in China, receiving proper training is crucial in order to improve skills and gain a competitive edge in the industry. Training serves as a platform to showcase talent to potential employers and many reputable programs have connections with voice acting agencies and productions. With a variety of programs available, including short-term courses and long-term degree programs, students are exposed to various aspects of voice acting such as vocal techniques, emotional expression, script reading, and dubbing practices. These programs also offer hands-on experience through real projects, preparing students for the industry. However, it should be noted that these programs are highly sought after and require dedication and hard work.

Breaking into the industry

Now that we have established that it is possible to become a voice actor in China with no prior experience, let’s explore the steps one can take to break into the industry.

1.
