I tried to get in the American market a long time ago, after \u2018Big Brawl\u2019, \u2018The Cannonball Run\u2019, and \u2018The Protector\u2019, [but it didn\u2019t] work,\u201d he told Yahoo\u2019s Role Recall. \u201cNobody knows who this little Chinese guy is, he speaks no English. I was disappointed. \u2018No more American market, I speak no English\u2019 [I said].\u201d<\/p>\n

His manager begged him to try one more movie, handing him the script for \u201cRush Hour\u201d. \u201cI said \u2018no, I don\u2019t like it,’\u201d he recalled, worried about his English proficiency.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis time, [your character] is from Hong Kong, so you can speak terrible English,\u201d his manager pleaded, pushing Chan to accept the role. \u201cTerrible English is okay,\u201d Chan said, agreeing to the movie on that condition.<\/p>\n

After he finished filming \u201cRush Hour\u201d, Chan said he told his manager that he was officially done with American movies. \u201cThis is it,\u201d he remembers saying. \u201cTerrible movie. They don\u2019t allow me to do my own style [of action]. The English, I\u2019m not good. Chris Tucker\u2019s English, I don\u2019t understand. Terrible movie!\u201d<\/p>\n

After going back to Asia, Chan said he was surprised to receive a phone call from his American manager. \u201cBig hit!\u201d his manager had told him. Even more surprising was the fact that the audience roared with laughter at the premiere. \u201cWhy are they laughing?\u201d he had thought to himself. \u201cI just don\u2019t understand!\u201d<\/p>\n

Chan says that after the success of the \u201cRush Hour\u201d trilogy, Hollywood finally took him seriously.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow slowly [I\u2019ve been understanding] American culture. [I\u2019ll] try to stay as long as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chan, who has been doing numerous interviews as part of a media tour for his recent movies, \u201cThe Lego Ninjago Movie\u201d and \u201cThe Foreigner\u201d, has spoken at length about his plans to make \u201cRush Hour 4\u201d. On October 5, he appeared on The Power 106\u2019s \u201cThe Cruz Show\u201d and said he had agreed to a script after turning down others for years. Afterwards, he joked that he was so dedicated to making \u201cRush Hour 4\u201d that he\u2019d even kill off Chris Tucker\u2019s character if he didn\u2019t agree to the script.<\/p>\n

\u201cRush Hour 4\u201d is scheduled to begin filming in 2018.<\/p>\n
